Q: What is a Diplomate ACVS or specialist small animal surgeon?
A: This term is reserved for veterinarians who have successfully completed the certification requirements of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. This includes a 3 year residency program, specific training and caseload requirements and performing research which must be published. The process is supervised by current ACVS Diplomates to ensure consistency in training and adhering to high standards. After completing a residency, the resident must sit for and pass a rigorous examination. Only then does the veterinarian earn the title of ACVS Diplomate.
